Baseball as a Prism to Jewish Experience

Week 2 | M, Tu, W, Th, F | Hultquist 201B | Ages 14 and up

This course will employ baseball as a prism to the last 150 years of Jewish American history. From the 1870s origins of the major leagues to the present, Jews — as players, announcers, sportswriters, owners, umpires, owners, union leaders, Commissioner, and fans — have participated in America's once and perhaps future national pastime. Topics will include Americanization, the tension between tradition and assimilation as exemplified by High Holiday decisions, antisemitism, notable players and episodes, and Team Israel.
