Broadway Musicals: The Method Behind the Magic

Week 7 | M, Tu, W, Th, F | Hultquist 201A | Ages 14 and up

Few things are as enthralling as a great Broadway musical. But behind the flash, the glitter and soaring melodies, what makes them work? Using a wide variety of video clips from great musicals, we will explore the structural elements that generate the on-stage magic. Specifically, in five class sessions we will examine: openings; "I Want" songs; conditional love songs; singing villains; and production numbers. Shows examined will include Kiss Me, Kate!, The Music Man, Fiddler on the Roof, Gypsy, Annie, and many more.
