DIY Winter Wreath Workshop On Demand

On Demand

Create your own holiday wreath using fresh greens! Betsy Burgeson, Chautauqua Institution's supervisor of gardens and landscapes, will take us around the grounds (virtually) as she explains the best types of greens to use as spillers, fillers and thrillers on your winter wreath. She'll also share tips and tricks on pruning to keep your wreath — and your plants — thriving. Once you've collected your supplies and fresh greens, follow along with Betsy to build your wreath. With her tips and techniques, your unique wreath will last into the new year!

To make your wreath, you'll need to start with these basics:

  • Wreath frame — anything round will work
  • Wire — 22 gauge floral wire is recommended
  • Pruners/scissors — sharp, bypass pruners are best
  • Gloves — recommended if working with sharp needles (spruces) or anything sticky (pines)
  • Greens — all the same variety or a mix! More information on varieties of greens is available within the class content.

Optional materials:

  • Accents — berries, pinecones, baubles — wherever your creativity takes you!
  • Ribbon — best if wired for structure
  • Spanish moss — if you're planning for an indoor wreath
  • Preservative spray — if your wreath will be staying indoors
