Easy Shibori Dying With Indigo

Week 9 | Wednesday | Turner 106 | Ages 14+

Create patterns on fabric and scarf using the ancient technique of Shibori. The cloth will be dyed in an Indigo vat, creating the traditional blue coloring. Shibori is a Japanese word used to describe a variety of manual resist techniques, such as binding, twisting, stitching or clamping, that create patterns on the fabric before putting in dye bath. You will learn how to do Arashi Shibori, which is a wrapping technique using a cylinder or rope. You will also learn Itijime Shibori, clamping and binding. Learn the traditional methods of Shibori, then make it your own!

Have taught numerous workshops in fabric dyeing, Shibori, indigo dyeing and surface design on fabric, as well as encaustic techniques. Recipient of Award of Excellence, Best of Ohio, 2014, Ohio Craft Museum.

Please come to class prepared with the following:

  • Scissors
  • Pen or pencil
  • Apron or paint shirt
  • May bring own cotton, linen or silk fabric (optional).
  • Note: Fabric and scarf will be provided, but participants are welcome to bring t-shirt or item of clothing to dye as well.
