Watercolor: Florals and Backgrounds

Week 4 | Tu, W, Th | Pier Building Classroom | Ages 14 and up

In this informative and fun workshop, you will capture the excitement of a summer in Chautauqua by creating a translucent composition of flowers or still life objects. Demonstrations will explore background options and various techniques including possible incorporation of patterns, sponging and will emphasize the elements of color, form and space. A valuable relaxed critique will follow. Some painting experience is helpful.

Students should come to class prepared with a watercolor set and paper. A specific supply list will be provided.

MATERIALS LIST

  • Paints - I use mostly Holbein Paints. However, Daniel Smith colors are great as well. You can use any set of tube watercolors - or - you can use the paints, palette, brushes, paper you have. Remember that really cheap paints have a white filler in them and it is often difficult to achieve better results.

Here's what I suggest:

My basic palette colors are:

  • Aureolin (yellow color)
  • New Gamboges (I like WN) or Gamboges Nova
  • Scarlet Lake
  • Permanent Rose
  • Raw Sienna
  • Cobalt Blue
  • Pthalo / Windsor Green
  • Mineral Violet
  • Verditer Blue
  • Ultramarine Blue or French Ultramarine
  • Alizarin Crimson
  • Brown Madder or similar
  • Cobalt Violet
  • Quinacrodone Gold (WN is best)
  • Turquoise Blue or Green (like Cobalt Jade Lt.) (We use these for painting water)

Optional: Sap Green, Naples Yellow, Yellow Ochre, Greenish Yellow, Burnt Sienna, Quin. Coral or Sienna (Daniel Smith paints)

New favorite is : Daniel Smith's Aussie Red Gold and Neutral Tint

  • Palette with cover and separate compartments (John Pike)
  • Watercolor Paper : Arches Cold Pressed 140# or 300#, Drawing paper for drawing & sketching
  • Brushes: Basic selection:
  • #14 or #12 round and a #8 or #6 round and a #10 flat (3/4" or 1") Optional -depending on your style and size of subject...
  • #4 Round and/or 1" to 2" flat
  • Additional : Plastic Water Containers. Paper Towels or Absorbing Pad, Small Spray Water Bottle

Note the time of day when your class is. Bring a snack, water or drink or sandwich if needed.

If you are traveling and are limited in space, Styrofoam trays or plates make alternative palettes, large cups can double for a water bowl.

I'll have some paints and good brushes to purchase if you need. Let me know.

Looking forward to painting with you !
