Harmonica Quickstart
Week 4, 5 | M, Tu, W, Th, F | Turner 208 | Ages 14 and up (or younger with accompanying registered adult)
The "people's instrument" that's fun to learn! You can carry it in your pocket, you don't have to tune it up, and you don't need to read music to play it. Get an overview of the standard 10-hole diatonic harmonica in the key of C, and we will start playing tunes right away.
Bring a 10-hole diatonic harmonica in the key of C. Hohner Marine Band Harmonica or Special 20 are fine choices, or you may purchase a less expensive harmonica at the Chautauqua Bookstore.
You may also buy a $5 plastic harmonica from the instructor in class.
Class Times
Students should come to class prepared with the following:
- A 10 hole diatonic harmonica in key of C.
- A Hohner Marine Band Harmonica, or Marine Band Special 20 is recommended.
Materials Fee: $5 for a harmonica.
Dean Johnson
Dean Johnson holds an M.A. in Theatre Arts from Illinois State University. He has worked as an actor, stand-up comedian, and musician traveling the United States and Canada and appearing in many venues including TV and Radio, theaters, and comedy clubs. For several years, he has taught Community Since 2014 Dean has taught classes for Chautauqua Special Studies.
