Ian Fleming and the Spiritual Core of Bond, James Bond: 007

Week 9 | M, Tu, W, Th, F | Hultquist 201B | Ages 14+

To truly understand the spiritual core of James Bond, or 007, the modern world’s most famous spy, we have to return to Ian Fleming’s original novels. Fleming wrote 12 novels and two collections of short stories about Bond. Within these 14 books lies a surprisingly different theme than the global image of the mythic secret agent today, as parables about evil people and deadly sins. Participants are requested to have read at least one James Bond novel. Suggested: Casino Royale or You Only Live Twice.

Benjamin Pratt

Ben Pratt grew up in a home with no books. He marvels with gratitude for the professors at Grove City College who turned me lustily toward literature. At Wesley Theological seminary, I developed my deepest appreciation for literature by studying five of six semesters in a class on “Classical Literature and Preaching” taught by Dr. Harry Taylor. There I learned theology and philosophy through literature and how to look beneath the presenting story for the deeper meaning. Thus, my reading of the James Bond tales, in which I discovered the word accidie throughout, led me to explore them in depth.
