Watercolors for Beginners
Week 8 | M, Tu, W, Th, F | Pier Building Classroom | Ages 15 and up
This is an introductory class designed for students who have had no previous art experience and always wanted to paint watercolors, or a beginner/advanced beginner who would like to take their watercolor painting to the next level. This course introduces the Art Elements & Principles of Design, foundational techniques in watercolor, understanding color, step-by-step instructions, and painting simple objects and landscapes. We'll discuss paper, paint, brushes, applications, dos and don'ts, and "how to do" secrets. Each class includes teaching and studio time.
Students are welcome to bring their own supplies.

Class Times
Students should come to class prepared with the following materials:
- A 9x12 spiral type pad of 140lb. Canson Watercolor Paper;
- #2 Pencil, Kneaded Eraser, and a Magic Rub or White Pearl Eraser;
- Extra Fine Black Sharpie (Optional)3/4";
- Roll of Masking Tape (Optional)Paper Towels;
NOTE: Students are welcome to bring their own watercolor paper, paints, and brushes. Instructor will provide all the materials for students to use & reference photos A supply list will be handed out at the first class and discussed so students can make good choices when buying supplies.
If you would like to shop for supplies before you come here are some suggestions:
- Suggest Winsor & Newton, Lowe Corelle Brushes Nylon Round Watercolor Brushes #0, #8 Nylon Flat Watercolor Brushes 1/4", 1/2", 3/4" Nylon Flat Wash Brush 1" or 1 1/2";
- Prang Watercolor Paint Set of 8 or 16 ovals--comes in a white tray Look in kid art supplies at Hobby Lobby, Michaels, or buy online;
- Suggested Brand for paints in tubes: Winsor & Newton Remember to buy a white pallet with a lid if you buy paint in tubes for mixing/storing
NOTE: Please do not purchase Crayola or Smart Art or "off" brands if buying paint in tubes! They have very little pigment and dry extremely light! The Prang set is what we will be using for the class.
